Mobiles moving in on fixed-line phones

Nearly half of Australians with both a mobile phone and a landline prefer to use their mobile phone for phone calls.

According to an Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) report, 45% of Australian 'household consumers' with both a mobile and fixed-line service prefer to use their mobile as the main tool for voice communications.

A slight majority (55%) of those with both a mobile and a fixed-line still prefer to use their landline as the main tool for voice communications.

Just 10% of those surveyed do not have a mobile phone and rely solely on their fixed line for voice communications, with ACMA terming these people ‘techno non-adopters’.

One quarter of respondents indicated they would consider replacing their fixed-line service with an alternative medium. Cost was the biggest factor in the decision, with many saying they would switch completely to a mobile service if the price of mobile calls dropped.

The report also found that despite the availability of technologies such as VoIP that run voice and data services on the one network, most service replacements related to fixed-line and mobile services.
