Industry heavyweights join forces to launch green initiative

Some of IT’s biggest names joined forces yesterday to launch the Climate Savers Computing Initiative in Australia, at the Going Green Expo.

Initiative members — including Intel, Dell, Google and Microsoft — were joined by Victorian ICT Minister Theo Theophanous at the launch of the event.

The initiative sets targets for businesses and individuals to improve power management of their computing equipment and purchase energy-efficient technology.

The ultimate goal of the initiative is to achieve a 50% reduction in global computer energy usage by 2010.

Lorie Wigle, representative of Intel and president of the initiative, officiated at the initiative’s launch.

“Australia’s contribution to achieving our targets is vital to the success of the program,” Wigle said.

Ian Birks, CEO of the Australian Information Industry Association, said: “Australia has a significant role to play in achieving the worldwide targets of Climate Savers Computing Initiative and I encourage all our member companies to get involved by joining the program and making a commitment to energy-efficient computing.”

Any business, government agency, NGO or person in Australia may join the initiative. Existing members include IT manufacturers, environmental groups and retailers.

Consumers can also support the initiative by pledging to purchase an initiative-certified system at www.climatesaverscomputing.org, which also has information on energy-saving features of personal computers.
