Telstra unveils iPhone 3G details

Telstra has put an end to weeks of speculation by announcing that it will sell the Apple iPhone 3G.

Telstra joins Optus and Vodafone in offering the device. All three will launch the iPhone 3G on July 11.

"Australians are very excited about iPhone 3G and we're delighted to bring this product to them on Telstra's high-speed Next G network," said David Moffatt, consumer group managing director at Telstra.

Telstra says its Next G network — which is claimed to cover 99% of Australia’s population — will set it apart from Optus’ and Vodafone’s offerings.

The telco has also promised free Wi-Fi access at Telstra hotspots throughout the country. Such hotspots are present at some Starbucks, McDonald's and Qantas Club locations.

Both the 8 and 16 GB iPhone 3G models will be available on a 24-month contract.

Plans start from $30/month with upfront costs of $279 for the 8 GB model and $399 for the 16 GB model. On a $100/month plan, the models will both be available at no upfront cost.

The telco has yet to announce any data plans.
