Emerson sets framework to reduce energy consumption

Emerson Network Power brought together some of the big hitters in the IT industry, Cisco, Dell, VMWare and IBM, to help launch its global initiative to slash energy consumption in the data centre.

Given the nomenclature of Energy Logic, the framework is a vendor-neutral roadmap that sets out 10 easy steps to reduce the amount of energy consumed in the data centre. It is particularly significant at a time when Australian companies are looking at ways to reduce their energy bills and comply with newly minted government regulations to become more eco-friendly.

Announced at a series of Energy Logic Symposium, the Sydney event attracted a huge audience of business decision makers, IT and facility managers, CIOs and government officials. The Sydney event has been replicated with similar results across Asia and other Australian cities since Emerson hit the road with Energy Logic.

David Scott, managing director, Emerson Network Power Australia, says that although the new regulations could initially seem daunting, local companies should be embracing the changes.

“I’ve heard of concerns over the cost of complying with increasingly stricter government regulations, but frameworks like Energy Logic can allay most of those fears by not only giving clear and decisive direction for energy cuts, but actually quantifying the savings in dollar terms for the business.

“The Energy Logic sequence can potentially save more than half of a data centre's energy load, which in practical terms can result in millions of dollars saved annually,” said Scott.

IBM Australia’s David Yip said the company is committed to doubling the Data Centre capacity without increasing energy consumption.

“IBM is investing US$1 billion in research and development to reach our goal,” said Yip.
