Residential VoIP has seen upswing in interest in Australia over the last 6–12 months, according to IDC.
Prior to this swing, Australian uptake of the service lagged behind uptake rates in the US and Europe, despite being available for four years.
"A key driver to this is the bundled sell of broadband and VoIP together and, more recently, the offering of Naked DSL services, which is a business model that has been enabled via regulation more than technical capabilities," said David Cannon, program manager, telecommunications at IDC.
In addition to these recent developments, IDC said that several factors previously putting consumers off VoIP have been overcome. These limiting factors included:
- Lack of adequate broadband
- High cost of broadband
- Poor quality of service
- Number portability
- High level of complexity involved
