Disaster recovery provider Interactive will turn its entire operation over to green power in November 2008.
In doing so, the company claims it is the world’s first data centre provider to run entirely on 100% renewable energy.
Interactive’s managing director, Christopher Ride, said that moving to green power is the most effective step to reducing an organisation’s carbon footprint, “particularly when dealing with power-hungry data centres”.
Furthermore, the move to pure green power is unavoidable in the global climate, Ride said.
“Using more expensive power that is environmentally healthy is part of our future whether we like it or not,” he said.
“For a business like ours, it's better to take the step now and be ahead of that curve, rather than behind it.”
Interactive invoked the power of research firm Gartner, which confirmed that the initiative is the first such green operation in the world.
The company quoted Gartner's Rakesh Kumar as saying: "In our research we have not found a data centre provider running their entire operation from 100% renewable energy sources."
