Australian chief information officers (CIOs) want to be more involved in setting the vision and business strategy of their organisations, according to new research from analyst firm Hydrasight.
The EMC-sponsored research assayed the views of a panel of CIOs from 200 Australian corporations. Respondents said they needed to be more involved in vision setting, organisational strategy and communication, in addition to the advice they provide to the business on technology.
“CIOs see themselves as providing greater levels of vision and technology strategy to the business,” said John Brand, research director at Hydrasight.
The survey also found that CIOs consider application development and integration as potential areas for cost reductions, while intelligence and analytics were not considered as important.
The research also found that CIOs believe that application development and integration are still significant areas of focus for achieving cost reductions and securing overall value. Knowledge, intelligence and analytics, on the other hand, are not considered priorities.
Research sponsor EMC said the results reflect its own view: that the growth of business information demands that executives take a more ‘information-centric approach’ to ultimately help drive revenue.
"The landscape of business is changing. CIOs are emerging as corporate strategists," said David Webster, president of EMC’s Australian and New Zealand operation.
"Organisations are looking to their CIOs to know where all the information is coming from and how it can be used to save money, increase value and mitigate risk."
