More than 11,100 homes and businesses in Tasmania will soon be connected to the National Broadband Network (NBN), under the next phase of the rollout of the network.
NBN Co, the organisation responsible for delivering Australians the NBN, has announced that construction will soon begin on the network in stage two communities in Tasmania, including Deloraine, Kingston Beach, George Town, Sorell, South Hobart, St Helens and Triabunna.
This follows the finalisation of a contract between NBN Co and Conneq Infrastructure Services. Aurora remains as NBN Co’s Tasmanian agent for the rollout.
“The delivery of the NBN in the first three communities was completed on time and on budget and I’m pleased to see construction on the next phase of the rollout will begin from the end of the next month,” said Senator Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy.
The NBN will be rolled out progressively in the seven phase two locations to make the best use of the workforce. All sites will be underway by early October.
Conroy said construction at each site will take between four and six months, and that the first services would be available from the second half of 2012.
Maps of the fibre rollout in the next phase are available at: www.nbntasmania.com.au.
Premises not covered by fibre will have access to either wireless or satellite services. An interim satellite service is due in July this year and wireless is expected to be available by mid 2012.
