Vodafone customers will be able to experience the next evolution in mobile broadband when the carrier flicks the switch on its commercial high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) service in Sydney and Melbourne metropolitan areas on 20 October.
HSDPA or mobile broadband as it will be marketed by Vodafone will provide users with data download speeds of up to 1.8 MBps, which is about four times faster than its current 3G service.
The mobile broadband service will provide users with an office-like connection experience with faster start-up and three times faster data upload speeds improving from 128 kbps on 3G to a peak speed of 384 kbps on HSDPA.
Vodafone mobile broadband connectivity is also available as a built-in option on Lenovo ThinkPad R60, T60, X60 and Z61 notebooks, allowing users in HSDPA and 3G coverage areas to enjoy the benefits of high-speed data networking without external modems or data cards.
Vodafone expects HSDPA mobile handsets to be available for retail sale in the first half of 2007.
