ENUM trial commences

Following the Australian Academic & Research Network's (AARNet) official accreditation as an electronic number mapping (ENUM) trial Registrar with the Australian Communications Authority (ACA), the trial is now available to AARNet members.

ENUM, the mapping of telephone numbers to domain names using domain name system (DNS)-based architecture, represents the future of business and personal communications whereby one telephone number will act as the single point of contact across all communication channels, including mobile, fixed line, fax, email and voice over IP connection.

"Everyone should be able to choose how to communicate with each other in a simple and cost-effective way. The exciting thing about ENUM is its single number functionality which will ensure further simplicity of communication," said Chris Hancock, CEO of AARNet.

As one of only three providers for Australian ENUM domains, AARNet is keen to look at how ENUM can be used in conjunction with its current middle-ware and service developments, in order to deliver new applications and services to its customers.

AARNet is encouraging its members to participate in the trial by offering a free ENUM Registry service to members of the Australian Research and Education community.
