ACA releases new booklet on telecommunications facilities

Australian Communications Authority (ACA) today released a new booklet on the installation of telecommunications facilities, including mobile phone facilities.

The booklet, entitled Telecommunications Facilities...Information for local government, has been developed to assist local councils and the community to understand their rights and those of telecommunications carriers under laws governing the installation of telecommunications facilities.

ACA Chairman Tony Shaw said today that the booklet provides a useful summary of the Federal Government laws and regulations covering the installation of telecommunications facilities, particularly 'low impact' facilities.

"The ACA supports the recent initiatives by the telecommunications industry to better communicate with local government and the community on the installation of the various facilities needed to operate mobile service networks.

This booklet should further assist that process," he added.

  • The ACA booklet covers:
  • what is a low impact facility;
  • carrier rights to install facilities;
  • carrier responsibilities when installing facilities;
  • carrier requirements to co-locate facilities;
  • objections to low impact facilities;
  • compensation; and
  • the regulation of public exposure to electromagnetic radiation.

The booklet is available from the ACMA website at www.acma.gov.au or by contacting the ACMA on telephone (03) 9963 6968.
