VoIP adoption low despite high awareness

Adoption of VoIP services is low among Australian businesses and consumers, despite high levels of awareness and interest, according to recent research from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

The study, The Australian VoIP Market, reports that although 81% of internet households were aware of VoIP, only 13% of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) had used a VoIP service.

“In making its regulatory decisions, ACMA increasingly needs to understand community attitudes and the importance of electronic media and communications services, and also understand how new and different services are being delivered in Australian households and businesses,” said Chris Chapman, ACMA chairman.

The study also examined consumer VoIP usage; it found that only 15% of people aged 18 or over had used VoIP. Usage was found to be higher in younger age groups and households with high income levels.

Typical VoIP users were more likely to be involved with emerging communications trends, such as adopting mobile phones over fixed landlines as the main means of telecommunications.
