Digital subscriber line standards released

The Australian Communication Authority (ACA) has released three new customer equipment standards for digital subscriber lines.

The adoption of the standards will enable the continued rollout of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) equipment and services.

The three new mandatory standards are:

  • AS/ACIF S002-2001: Analogue interworking and non-interference requirements for Customer Equipment for connection to the Public Switched Telephone Network;

  • AS/ACIF S006-2001: Requirements for Customer Equipment operating in the voiceband, for connection to the non-switched Telecommunications Network; and

  • AS/ACIF S043-2001: Requirements for Customer Equipment for connection to a metallic local loop interface of a Telecommunications Network.

"DSL technology has the potential to generate significant benefits for consumers by increasing the capacity of copper telephone lines so that they can provide high-speed wideband services such as Internet access, on top of the existing telephone service, through the same telephone line," ACA Chairman, Tony Shaw, said.

The new standards were developed by the Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF) through a working group made up of industry and consumer representatives. The ACA has now made these as mandatory technical standards under the Telecommunications Act 1997.

ACIF is also working towards the finalisation of three operational codes of practice, including a code that carriers and carriage service providers will utilise to deploy DSL equipment with minimal cross-interference with other services.
